Limbe man wins Khashi-Khashi promotion - 3/July/09

Mahomed Salim of Limbe emerged winner of K200,000 followed by Sarah Temweka Gondwe of Blantyre who grabbed K150.000 while Rodney Kanyama of Lilongwe won K100,000. Entry into the promotion requires opening a fixed deposit account of K10.000 and FMB says it received 560 entries in June.

FMB Cricket gathers pace - 8/May/09

The K500 000 FBM 20/ 20 Southern Region Cricket League gathered pace and rhythm on Sunday as it entered the second week with Mpingwe Yellow tasting defeat against rampant hosts Oriental Indians. Six games were played in the second week. Oriental, who won the toss to bat first, made 151 runs for nine wickets, making life difficult for the visitors who could only go as far as 130 all out.

IFC boosts FMB lending capacity - 21/November/08

International Finance Corporation (IFC) announced on the 19th of November that it had joined forces with First Merchant Bank (FMB) to increase lending to Small and Medium Enterprises (SME's). In an interview in Blantyre IFC Consultant Alexis Faulkner said it aims at raising the country's share of global trade by developing the agribusiness sector through its Africa Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) finance programme.

FMB declares K400 million bonus - 24/July/08

Directors of First Merchant Bank (FMB) have declared a K400 million interim dividend to its shareholders representing 18 tambala per share.

But this is without the contribution from their subsidiary in Botswana, Capital Bank Limited, which is not expected to beef up the profit package until 2009.

FMB eyeing forex market - 24/July/08

First Merchant Bank (FMB) will later this year open another subsidiary to be trading under FMB Forex Bureau Limited, the bank announced.

FMB Botswana capital up 100% - 30/May/08

FIRST Merchant Bank (FMB) has doubled its investment in Capital Bank from 20 million Pula (around K400 million) to 40 million Pula (about K800 million). Chairman for Capital Bank Hiteshi Anadkat said this on Wednesday, a day after the launch of the new bank, when he addressed senior officials from the Bank of Botswana and business representatives in Gaborone. Anadkat said FMB would double up the investment in Capital Bank to boost the setting up of new branches in remote areas of Botswana within three years.

FMB named Capital Bank in Botswana - 09/May/08

First Merchant Bank of Malawi (FMB) will be trading as Capital Bank Limited in Botswana, the bank said yesterday. FMB Manager for Business Development and Subsidiary Management Operations George Kamvulumvulu said this in Blantyre on the sidelines of a function where the bank was donating drugs to Mlambe Hospital.

He said some members of staff from Botswana are already in the country for orientation. "It is true that we will be trading as Capital Bank and as of now all the structure for operation in Gaborone are in place," said Kamvulumvulu.

According to a press ' release from the Bank of Botswana which is that country's central bank, FMB is the majority shareholder and the minority shares are held by locals. Capital Bank which opened its doors in March this year would add the number of commercial banks in Botswana to seven after Barclays Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, First National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Standard Bank and Bank Gaborone.

FMB presented drugs worth K100,000 to Mlambe Hospital which is based in Lunzu as part of the banks corporate social responsibility to the society. Kamvulumvulu said the bank is focussed at developing the health sector through provision of scholarships to medical and nursing students at the College of Medicine and Kamuzu College of Nursing which are under the University of Malawi.

FMB Cheers Patients -08/Apr/08

First Merchant Bank on Friday sheered the sick at Mzuzu hospital as part of its corporate social responsibility.

Mzuzu Branch Operations Officer Harry Munthali, led staff members to donated assorted items that included groceries.

"FMB operates within the community, live in the community and stay in the same (community), hence we must be seen to be part of it by supporting it." said Munthali.
The operations manager said the bank would continue to help the hospital as part of its corporate and social responsibility.

"This is part of ploughing back to the community and we FMB as a corporate citizen in Mzuzu felt we have to donate a little something to the needy," he said.

The bank donated hampers filled with soap, orange squash bottle, sugar and other basic things, to 72 patients in the Children and Nutritional Ward.

FMB Base Rate reduced to 18.5% -12/Feb/08

First Merchant Bank has reduced its base lending rate from 19.5 percent to 18.5
percent with effect from February 8. This means the bank is now the most competitive
lending financial institution on the market in terms of interest charged on loans.

First Merchant Bank to establish subsidiary bank in Botswana

First Merchant Bank announced that Bank of Botswana has granted a banking licence for the establishment of a bank in Botswana in which FMB will be the 51% majority shareholder and technical partner. FMB’s initial investment will be Pula 10.2million. It is expected that banking operations in Botswana will commence when the final remaining regulatory requirements are met.
